Level 3 Physical Grading

After breakfast we will take the 30 minute scenic drive into the base of the Sierra Nevados arriving at the main entrance into Tayrona National Park. From the entrance, you trek along a well-maintained path, arriving at the sprawling beach of Arrecifes after about one hour. On the path we are likely to see many different species of birds, including parrots and macaws, reptiles, monkeys including Howlers, Capuchins and Tamarins, Coatis and other forest mammals, and if we are lucky (and quiet) perhaps something more exotic like an Ocelot or Oncilla.

Horseback

Another option is to travel to Arrecifes by horseback. The horse route is much more open, and you are less likely to see animal life, but it's still a beautiful trip, lots of fun and you can conserve energy for the hike up to Pueblito.

Either by hoof or hiking boots, your experienced guide will point out interesting facts about Tayrona's incredibly diverse flora and fauna and tell you about the rich cultural history of the region. After exploring Arrecifes head to La Picina (Spanish name literally means "the pool). Here, the calm and sheltered bay makes a beautiful and safe place for a swim. If you brought snorkeling gear, Picina is also a good place to snorkel (when the conditions are right).

Next we visit Cabo San Juan de Guia  Cabo San Juan with it's giant boulder strewn beaches bordered by dense tropical forests. Cabo San Juan deserves its reputation as being the most beautiful beach of Tayrona National Park. This is a great place to grab something to eat or drink before we head up the mountain to Pueblito.

The path to the Indian ruins of El Pueblito is spectacular and offers fantastic views of the mountains and jungle. This is another great opportunity to view colorful butterflies, birds and reptiles and perhaps spot the rare and endangered Cotton Top Tamarin - the area is the last place in the world where these 1/2 pint-sized primate still survives in the wild.

The ancient Tayrona indigenous site is worthy of a few hours exploration. From the stone plazas of Pueblito, in the cooler mountain air, it's fun to try to imagine what life must have been like there 500 hundred years ago.

In the morning we take a one hour drive through the Sierra Nevadas de Santa Marta Mountains to the picturesque town of Minca. At almost 2000 ft. above sea level, temperatures are much more comfortable than the coast. The road getting there is a "little" rough but nevertheless, the incredible views of the Sierra Nevadas will help you ignore the jarring pot holes. Interestingly, the residents of Minca voted "not" to fix their road in order to preserve the tranquility of their town. The town is still a "hidden gem" but once the road is fixed, hordes of tourists will flock there to enjoy the magical beauty of this small town.

After strolling through "downtown" Minca, we will tour the Victoria Coffee Plantation, the oldest coffee plantation in Colombia. We will have the rest of the day to visit the snow melt waters of Poza Azules and other waterfalls along the Minca River.
